Overview

Mortar Bait Knight is a dual-threat control deck that forces opponents into lose-lose decisions every time they spend a spell. With a 54.6% win rate and 1.15% usage in the March 2026 Week 10 meta, this deck combines Mortar's siege chip damage with a swarm-bait package that punishes opponents for using their small spells incorrectly. Knight provides a tanky frontline that separates this variant from Skeleton King versions, offering consistent defensive value without relying on a champion's ability cycle. The 3.1 average elixir cost keeps the rotation fast enough to out-cycle most opponents while maintaining enough defensive substance to handle beatdown pushes.

Strategy

Opening Play

Start with Goblins or Dart Goblin at the bridge to probe for their small spell. If they Log or Barbarian Barrel immediately, you know Skeleton Barrel will connect. If they hold their spell, play Mortar at the bridge after your first defensive rotation. Never open with Mortar blind β€” you need to identify their win condition first.

Single Elixir

This phase is about establishing your bait rhythm. Alternate between Skeleton Barrel and Goblins to drain their spell responses. Once they commit a spell to one, immediately punish with the other. Place Mortar offensively only when you have an elixir lead or after a successful defense. Knight tanks for everything β€” use him to absorb damage from bridge spam, mini-tanks, and support troops. Dart Goblin behind your tower provides incredible chip value if left unaddressed, and its long range punishes lazy placements.

Double Elixir

This is where Mortar Bait overwhelms. Stack Mortar at the bridge with Knight tanking in front while Minions and Dart Goblin threaten from behind. If the opponent focuses on Mortar, send Skeleton Barrel opposite lane. The key is constant pressure β€” never give them breathing room to build a push. Fireball their medium-health defensive clusters, especially Musketeer, Wizard, or Magic Archer grouped near a tower. Prediction Barbarian Barrel on their swarm counters seals games.

Matchups

Favorable Matchups

  • Beatdown (Golem, Giant): Their slow buildup gives you free Mortar damage. Pressure opposite lane with Skeleton Barrel when they drop their tank in the back. Knight handles support troops cheaply.
  • Graveyard Control: Your swarm cards counter Graveyard efficiently. Goblins and Minions clean up skeletons while Mortar chips their tower simultaneously.
  • Hog Cycle: Knight and Goblins defend Hog Rider cheaply, and your bait package creates more pressure than they can handle.

Unfavorable Matchups

  • Splash-heavy decks (Wizard + Tornado): Multiple splash answers neutralize your swarms. Focus on Mortar chip and Fireball their splashers.
  • X-Bow: Mortar cannot out-range X-Bow. You need to use Knight to tank X-Bow shots while chipping with Skeleton Barrel on the other lane.
  • Royal Giant: RG out-ranges Mortar and forces defensive Mortar placements that eliminate your chip damage.

Tips

  • Dart Goblin positioning: Place Dart Goblin behind your Princess Tower so it can snipe troops crossing the bridge while being protected. Its range lets it contribute to offense without crossing the river.

  • Skeleton Barrel timing: Send Skeleton Barrel after the opponent uses their small spell on Goblins or Minions. The 2-3 second window before their spell cycles back is your golden opportunity.

  • Mortar placement: Against building-targeting win conditions, plant Mortar in the center to pull Hog Rider or Royal Hogs. It doubles as both defense and chip damage simultaneously.

  • Knight as a bridge blocker: Drop Knight at the bridge against incoming Bandit, Battle Ram, or Dark Prince charges. His high HP absorbs the charge hit and creates a counterpush opportunity.

  • Fireball value: Always aim to clip the tower when Fireballing defensive troops. The chip adds up β€” three value Fireballs deal roughly 900 tower damage over a game.

  • Minions on defense: Save Minions for air threats or to DPS down tanks. Never use them proactively unless you have bait backup ready β€” they die to every small spell.

Common Mistakes

  • Opening with Mortar at the bridge: Without knowing their deck, you risk giving a free Hog Rider or Royal Giant connection while your Mortar targets the tower.

  • Wasting Barbarian Barrel on chip: Save Barbarian Barrel for defensive value β€” the spawned Barbarian provides excellent DPS against tanks and win conditions.

  • Ignoring spell bait order: If you send both Skeleton Barrel and Goblins before they use a spell, they can address both cheaply. Stagger your bait cards to force impossible choices.

  • Defensive Mortar all game: Mortar Bait wins by chipping. If you only use Mortar defensively, you surrender your primary damage source and rely entirely on spell chip.
