Overview

Lava Hound is the premier air beatdown archetype, built around creating devastating aerial pushes that most decks struggle to defend. With an average elixir cost of 4.0, this deck combines the massive HP tank of Lava Hound with the high damage burst of Balloon for one of the game's most deadly combinations. When Lava Hound pops into Lava Pups, the Balloon often reaches the tower uncontested, dealing devastating death damage. Miner provides chip damage and tanks for Lava Pups after Hound pops. Skeleton Dragons add splash damage support while Mega Minion offers reliable single-target DPS. Tombstone distracts ground troops during your air assault. Mastering this deck means timing your pushes perfectly and overwhelming opponent's air defense.

Strategy

Opening Play

Never start with Lava Hound immediately—gather information first. Open with Tombstone in the center to scout opponent's deck and prepare defensive structure. Alternatively, Mega Minion or Skeleton Dragons in the back builds elixir while revealing opponent responses. Miner can chip damage and bait out defensive cards. Your goal is identifying their air defense (Musketeer, Wizard, Inferno Tower/Dragon, Electro Wizard) before committing Lava Hound. Note their anti-air so you can counter it during your push.

Single Elixir

Play defensively and patiently while building elixir advantages. Use Tombstone to distract tanks and building-targeting troops. Mega Minion and Skeleton Dragons defend efficiently against most threats. Look for Lava Hound opportunities when opponent is low on elixir, their main anti-air is out of cycle, or you've built a significant elixir lead. If you must push in single elixir, commit Lava Hound at the back corner around the 1:00 mark when double elixir is approaching. Miner chip damage keeps pressure without overcommitting—every Miner hit adds up.

Double Elixir

This is where Lava Hound dominates. Start Lava Hound in the back corner and prepare your support. Add Balloon behind Lava Hound—timing so Balloon reaches the tower as Lava Hound is about to pop is devastating. Use Skeleton Dragons or Mega Minion to eliminate their air-targeting defenders. Fireball their Musketeer, Wizard, or grouped anti-air for massive value. When Lava Hound pops, immediately Miner the tower to tank for Lava Pups—this synergy often deals 1000+ damage. Apply relentless air pressure—if one push fails, rebuild immediately. Your constant aerial assault will eventually break through any defense.

Matchups

Favorable Matchups

  • Log Bait: Their Inferno Tower is their only real answer, and Miner can distract it while your Balloon gets through. Princess and swarms can't stop aerial assault. Apply heavy Lava Hound pressure and Fireball their Inferno Tower + Princess for devastating value.
  • Hog Cycle: Their light air defense (usually just Musketeer) can't handle your aerial push. Tombstone stops Hog Rider while you build your Lava Hound deathball. Fireball their Musketeer and watch your Balloon connect repeatedly.
  • Golem Beatdown: Air beats ground in this matchup. Apply same-lane pressure when they commit Golem—your air push will reach tower faster. Use Tombstone to distract their Golem while your Balloon devastates their tower.

Unfavorable Matchups

  • X-Bow Cycle: Tesla hard-counters your air troops, and their cheap cycle can defend your expensive pushes. Apply same-lane pressure against X-Bow with Lava Hound tanking. Focus on overwhelming their Tesla with multiple air units—once it's down, your Balloon connects.
  • Electro Giant: Their ground push is difficult to stop with your air-focused deck. Use Tombstone to distract E-Giant and Mega Minion from distance. Apply aggressive opposite-lane pressure with Lava Hound + Balloon when they commit E-Giant—race for tower damage.
  • Pekka Bridge Spam: Their fast punishment when you commit Lava Hound can be devastating. Play more conservatively—don't Lava Hound unless you can defend opposite lane. Their Magic Archer and Electro Wizard are problematic for your air push. Try to Fireball value targets and apply pressure carefully.

Tips

  • Lava Hound placement: Always place Lava Hound in the back corner to maximize elixir regeneration during the long walk. This gives you time to build the perfect support push.

  • Balloon timing: Deploy Balloon when Lava Hound reaches the bridge, not earlier. This ensures Balloon stays protected behind Hound and reaches tower as Hound pops into Pups.

  • Lava Pups value: Lava Pups deal massive damage if they reach the tower. Use Miner to tank for them immediately after Hound pops—this synergy is your primary damage source.

  • Miner chip: Even without full pushes, consistent Miner chip damage adds up. Send Miner to unpredictable positions—outside corners, behind tower, same-lane as pressure—to maximize hits.

  • Fireball priority: Save Fireball for high-value anti-air targets near tower. Musketeer + tower, Wizard + tower, or any 4+ elixir air-targeting troop gives excellent value.

  • Tombstone timing: Place Tombstone early to build up Skeleton spawns, or reactively to distract charging troops and tanks. The spawned Skeletons add defensive value over time.

  • Skeleton Dragons positioning: Keep Skeleton Dragons protected behind Lava Hound. Their splash damage eliminates Minions, Bats, and Minion Horde that threaten your Balloon.

  • Mega Minion survival: Mega Minion survives Fireball, making it reliable support. Use defensively against tanks or offensively to snipe defensive troops like Musketeer or Wizard.

Common Mistakes

  • Early Lava Hound commitment: Playing Lava Hound in single elixir without elixir advantage lets opponents punish hard. Be patient—wait for double elixir or clear openings.

  • Balloon before Lava Hound: Sending Balloon early exposes it to all defensive fire. Always let Lava Hound tank first—Balloon should arrive as Hound reaches the tower.

  • Ignoring anti-air tracking: Not tracking opponent's Musketeer, Wizard, or Inferno cards leads to completely stopped pushes. Know when their anti-air is out of cycle before committing.

  • Forgetting Miner on Pups: Not placing Miner to tank for Lava Pups wastes massive damage potential. Always have Miner ready when Lava Hound is about to pop.

  • Poor Fireball timing: Using Fireball too early or on low-value targets wastes your primary anti-air removal. Save it for grouped defenders near tower.

  • Over-defending: Using too many cards on defense delays your Lava Hound timing. Accept some tower damage if it means building better pushes—your offense wins games, not defense.
