Overview
Lumberjack is a 4-elixir Legendary melee troop with very fast movement speed, 950 HP, and a devastating 200 damage per hit at tournament standard, swinging every 0.8 seconds for 250 DPS -- among the highest sustained melee DPS in the game. His signature mechanic is dropping a Rage spell on death, boosting nearby troop movement and attack speed by 35% for 7.5 seconds. In the March 2026 meta, Lumberjack commands a 9.1% usage rate with a 55.3% win rate, dominating in LumberLoon (Lumberjack + Balloon), Golem beatdown, and bridge spam archetypes. What makes Lumberjack uniquely powerful is his dual threat: he deals massive damage alive through rapid attacks, and his death Rage transforms surviving troops into an unstoppable wave. Opponents face an impossible choice -- kill him early and trigger Rage, or let him live and take 250 DPS to their tower.
Strategy
When to Play
Lumberjack excels as a bridge rush threat in single elixir. His very fast speed catches opponents off-guard, reaching the tower before they can react with proper counters. Drop Lumberjack at the bridge when the opponent plays an expensive card at the back (Golem, Lava Hound, Elixir Collector) -- he reaches their tower in under 2 seconds and deals 600+ damage if unanswered.
The primary offensive use is tanking for Balloon (LumberLoon). Play Lumberjack at the bridge with Balloon immediately behind him. Lumberjack absorbs defensive troops and tower shots, dies, and drops Rage directly onto Balloon. Raged Balloon attacks 35% faster, hitting towers every 1.3 seconds instead of 2 seconds -- devastating. In double elixir, cycle LumberLoon every 15 seconds with spell support for relentless pressure.
Defensively, Lumberjack's 250 DPS shreds tanks. Drop him onto incoming Hog Riders, Royal Giants, or Elite Barbarians. His fast attack speed means he kills Hog Rider in 4 hits (3.2 seconds) before Hog gets more than 2 swings on your tower.
Placement Fundamentals
On offense, play Lumberjack at the bridge, 1 tile ahead of Balloon. This ensures Lumberjack crosses first, absorbs the first defensive response, and dies where his Rage covers Balloon's approach path. Against buildings (Tesla, Cannon), place Lumberjack on the outside tile so he targets the tower rather than walking into the building's kill zone.
On defense, drop Lumberjack directly on top of the enemy troop. His very fast attack speed wins most 1v1 interactions when he strikes first. Against Hog Rider, place Lumberjack 3 tiles from the river in the Hog's path -- he intercepts and kills Hog before it connects more than twice.
Synergies
Lumberjack + Balloon is the premier combo in the game. Lumberjack tanks, dies, drops Rage on Balloon for guaranteed tower connection in most scenarios. The combo costs 9 elixir but routinely deals 1500-2000 damage when supported with Snowball or Arrows. In Golem decks, Lumberjack behind Golem deals 250 DPS to anything targeting the Golem, then his death Rage accelerates Night Witch Bats and Baby Dragon. Bandit + Lumberjack at the bridge is a devastating bridge spam combination -- even if they defend one, the other connects for massive damage. Use Lumberjack + Freeze for a surprise burst: Lumberjack hits frozen tower 3-4 times before Freeze ends, dealing 600-800 damage.
Matchups
Strong Against
- Hog Rider: Lumberjack's 250 DPS kills Hog in 3.2 seconds, limiting it to 1-2 tower hits. Lumberjack survives with 500+ HP for a counterpush, and death Rage boosts any troops you play behind him.
- Musketeer/Wizard: Very fast speed lets Lumberjack close distance before they get more than 2 shots off. He kills both in 4 hits and drops Rage for a boosted counterpush.
- Elite Barbarians: Lumberjack's 250 DPS combined with tower support shreds E-Barbs. He kills one E-Barb while tower finishes the other for a clean defensive trade.
- Graveyard: Lumberjack's fast attack speed mows through Skeletons as they spawn. His 0.8-second hit speed clears Graveyard more efficiently than most 4-elixir defenders.
Countered By
- P.E.K.K.A: P.E.K.K.A kills Lumberjack in 2 hits (1192 x 2 = 2384 vs 950 HP) and the death Rage only boosts your tower, not P.E.K.K.A. She walks through him without breaking stride.
- Skeleton Army: 15 Skeletons surround and kill Lumberjack before he can clear them all. His single-target attack can only kill one at a time while 14 others deal damage.
- Tornado: Tornado pulls Lumberjack away from the tower and into King Tower activation range. His death Rage drops in a useless location far from any allied troops.
- Knight + Ice Spirit: Knight tanks Lumberjack's hits while Ice Spirit freezes him for 1 second. Clean 4-elixir defense against a 4-elixir attacker with no Rage value generated.
- Mega Knight: MK's spawn damage (480) plus one hit kills Lumberjack instantly. The death Rage drops under Mega Knight who simply walks through it.
Tips
LumberLoon spacing: Deploy Lumberjack 1 tile ahead of Balloon at the bridge. This ensures LJ crosses first, tanks the first defensive response, and dies exactly where Rage covers Balloon's path to the tower.
Death Rage positioning: When Lumberjack is about to die, ensure your follow-up troops (Balloon, Bats, Minions) are within the Rage radius. The 7.5-second Rage boost is wasted if no allied troops are nearby.
Punish back-end plays: When the opponent drops Golem, Lava Hound, or Elixir Collector in the back, immediately Lumberjack at the bridge opposite lane. He reaches their tower in under 2 seconds and deals 600+ uncontested damage.
Defensive DPS machine: Use Lumberjack to defend against Hog Rider, Royal Giant, and other medium tanks. His 250 DPS kills Hog in 3.2 seconds while surviving with enough HP to counterpush behind his own death Rage.
Bait their counter: If the opponent counters LumberLoon with Tornado, play Lumberjack solo first to bait the Tornado, then push with Balloon next cycle when Tornado is unavailable.
Rage extends to tower: When Lumberjack dies near your own Princess Tower (defensive death), the Rage boosts your tower's attack speed by 35%. This helps melt remaining enemy troops faster during defensive scrambles.
Split push threat: In double elixir, play Lumberjack one lane and Balloon the other. The opponent must defend both simultaneously -- whichever they ignore deals devastating tower damage.
Common Mistakes
Lumberjack behind Balloon: Playing Lumberjack behind Balloon means Balloon reaches the tower first and dies before Rage drops. LJ must always lead so his death Rage boosts Balloon, not the empty ground behind it.
Ignoring death Rage location: Letting Lumberjack die in a useless position (middle of the arena, wrong lane) wastes his most powerful mechanic. Position pushes so LJ dies near allied troops that benefit from the 35% speed boost.
Solo Lumberjack offense in single elixir: Rushing Lumberjack at the bridge alone against a player with full elixir lets them counter with Knight or Valkyrie for zero damage. Only bridge rush when they are low on elixir or committed elsewhere.
No follow-up after Rage: Lumberjack dies and drops Rage, but you have no troops to benefit from it. Always have Balloon, Bats, or another troop ready to enter the Rage zone within 1-2 seconds of LJ's death.
Using LJ to tank Inferno Tower: Lumberjack's 950 HP melts against Inferno Tower's ramp damage. He dies before generating useful Rage positioning. Use Ice Golem or Giant to tank Inferno instead.
